Chapter 11

At their visit to the vineyard, Brice introduced Sunny to several workers and to his Uncle Tranner, who happened to be there picking up Aunt Letti for the evening. He showed her around the vines, where they made the wine, the bar area, and NamaStays Inn with all its small cabins they rented out to visitors. She seemed particularly interested in the Yoga in the Vines classes and wondered if she could attend one. She and Aunt Letti made plans for her to come back with Hollis to take a class one morning before school the next week. Sunny loved everything about the vineyard and made everyone she encountered smile. Brice envied the ease and simplicity with which she saw life, even though what she truly saw had to have been anything but simple. He thought on that while he and his dad prepared the barbecue and food for dinner that night at the vineyard. Hollis and Sunny had left, saying they had plans for dinner to meet Ryne and his mom, Jessica Calloway.

Macy was still at school and not coming home, so it was just Brock, his mom and dad, and his grandma Eva who stayed for dinner. His mom and grandma set the table on the patio in front of the bar area. The winery was still open, but it was a slow night, so the few people who lingered sat on bar stools inside, chatting it up with Brock while he wiped down the counters. Brice moved over to where Brock was working when he finished helping his dad and looked out the windows of the modern garage doors, now closed as the evening air grew chillier and chillier. The patio area was filled with small table sets surrounding one big wooden table with bench seats and interwoven with barrels for personal fires. Over their heads was a fun canopy of strung Edison lights.

“Need any help in here, Brock?” Brice asked his brother just as he finished the last table.

“Nope, I think I’m done. You timed it just right.” Brock snapped the dish towel he had at the back of Brice’s legs, causing him to jump out of the way before he remembered to clutch his arm as if it had caused him pain. “Oh shoot, Brice, I’m sorry. Forgot about your arm.”

“It’s okay. It’s not as bad as it was.” Brice absently rubbed his wrist, thinking of what had happened at the falls earlier.

“You all right, man? You seem kind of out of it tonight,” Brock intuitively observed.

“Yeah, I’m okay.” Brice picked up a couple random glasses Brock had gathered onto one table and started to take them into the kitchen area. “How are your micros?” Brice asked, referring to the microbrews Brock had been testing out in the cellar until his operation got too big and had to move into the out building where they made the wine.

Brock gave Brice a big cocky smile. “I think they are doing awesome! You gotta try some of ’em out, little brother.
